What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

There are so many types of Martial Arts forms to choose from, we would like to highlight what sets Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu apart from the others.

Royce Gracie showed the world the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1993 when he defeated multiple opponents in one night… again and again. He took little to no damage per fight even though his opponents were 20, 30 and in some cases 50 pounds heavier than himself.

Most martial arts neglect the fact that over 90% of fights go to the ground. There is no other martial art as effective at fighting in a clinch or on the ground as Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu has so much to offer. Let’s face it, real life physical confrontations don’t begin with a “ready set go”. Many times an unsuspecting victim is grabbed on the shoulder, around the neck or tackled to the ground before they even know what hit them. This is exactly where the Jiu-Jitsu practitioner is comfortable. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prepares one for any type of attack; whether it is standing or on the ground.

NG Lineage

Royce Gracie is the son of the legendary Hélio Gracie who is the father figure of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) along with his brother Carlos Gracie. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil . Royce learned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from his father and his older brothers Rorion Gracie, Relson Gracie, and Rickson Gracie.

November 12, 1993 marked a massive change in the life of Royce Gracie after his brother, Rorion Gracie, devised the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) which put fighters of various martial arts together to see who came out on top. There were 16 fighters with the likes of Ken Shamrock who would take up the challenge. Royce Gracie, at less than 180lbs, was chosen to represent Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and showcase it to the world as a system that could defeat much larger opponents.
